Leesburg Council Candidates' Forum

Last night, the League of Women Voters hosted a Leesburg Town Council candidates forum at Rust Library. All seven candidates who will be on the ballot on November 8th were there. My opening statement encapsulates why I am running for Council and the vision I have for our Town's future. I am glad to share it with you.

My name is Evan Macbeth. Ten years ago Abbe and I moved to Leesburg because we wanted to raise a family, and Leesburg seemed to us to be the perfect town to start ours. My daughter is now eight and my son is six. I’m running for Town Council because the work we do today will determine what opportunities they’ll have as they get older. When they turn sixteen, I’d like my kids to be able to find a job in Town, and learn the value of hard work and earning a paycheck. The businesses we attract today will determine the jobs available for my kids - and yours - tomorrow. When I am teaching my kids to drive, I want the roads they’re learning on to be safe, and a bit less crowded. The decisions we make as a Town today can make that happen. Eventually, I’d love my kids to be able to move out of my house, and afford their own apartment here in Leesburg, the Council can help ensure that young adults starting out on their own can find a place to live, and work, in our community.

También, es importante que todos nuestros hijos aprendan que somos pueblo, con el mismo futuro. Y que los padres de diferentes culturas quieren el mismo progreso para sus familias.

Ultimately, I want to build a Leesburg where my kids will want to raise their kids, so we don’t have to chase our grandkids across the country. After all, as many of our neighbors have proven, Leesburg is a great place to retire. I’m running for Leesburg Town Council to build a Town that all our grandkids will be proud to live in. After all, our job is to ensure Leesburg is the hometown of the 21st Century.

I hope you agree, and will join our campaign and vote for me on November 8.
